There is nothing singularly outstanding about the artwork, but it certainly does not lack anything. The scenery has moments of greatness and normalness intertwined. But there are some scenes, when the focus is on one character in particular in fierce competition, where the art just stands out. And just like the artwork during the competitive scenes, the music keeps the audience thoroughly psyched up for the next scene. Princess 9 has some of the best music for competition since Chariots of Fire.

Unlike other DVDs put out by ADV, this one comes with some extras on it. The Oden Cooking Special is entertaining and the player statistics are a helpful way of keeping all the characters straight.

At first glance this series may seem like an animated version of A League of Their Own, but it is far from it. Those girls never had to deal with the problems this girls do and that helps make Princess 9 more realistic and a definite must-see.

In addition to the thrill, there is a solid message in the series that many contemporary anime series lack. The series teaches the value of friendship and perseverance. While some fans probably won't be attracted by this, it's noteworthy for parents looking to Otaku-ize their young children. The messages aren't subtle so those looking for something with deep hidden meaning should try something else. But those who just want something fun with a bit of excitement, should definitely pick this up.

Although Mahoromatic showed that series like this could have some real depth, this one has no such bold aspirations. It is ultimately almost entirely about its comedic antics and fan service. In the former respect the series gets off to a slow start, as first episode focuses more on establishing the circumstances than on delivering the laughs, but by episode 3 it hits its full comedic stride, producing plenty enough laughs to warrant a view; we've seen characters get beaten up like Yoshitaka does before, but rarely has it been so thoroughly deserved or is so funny in execution. The laughs remain fairly regular even through to the end, as this series never fully takes the entirely serious turn that series like this often do in their later stages (although it does have some serious moments).

The fan service also prevails throughout, with plentiful sexy costumes and lots of near-nudity, to the point that the lack of full exposure becomes a joke at times. Two very brief scenes – one in the first half and one near the very end – do even show nipples, which seems a little incongruous given how painstakingly the series otherwise just barely avoids showing it. The series also conspicuously offers a girl maid for every taste; Izumi is the busty one, Anna is the mid-sized one, and Mitsuki is the petite loli. The series also hosts fan service of the “anime references” kind, with costumes and names from other Gainax titles and occasional references to non-Gainax anime popping up in various places to delight fans with a sharp eye and ear. Only very astute fans will catch them all.

Section 23's release of the title carries no English dub and seems unable to completely escape the typos and grammatical errors which plagued Sentai Filmworks subs in other titles earlier this year. All twelve episodes are split between two disks fitted into a normal-sized DVD case. Extras split between the two disks include original Japanese promos, clean opener and closer, and an episode-length interview with producer Hiroki Sato from a (Japanese TV) TBS special.

A title like “He is my Master” suggests something sexy in a trashy way, and to a certain extent the series does live up (or down?) to that expectation. Contrary to expectations, though, it does not feature subservient girls gratefully pandering to a master's wishes (although the protagonist would probably prefer that!), instead using a female lead who only reluctantly goes along with the maid scheme out of necessity and is certain to assert herself at any hint of the “master” getting too far out of line. The degree to which Izumi gets sexually harassed – let's see, she has a boy her age, a girl her age, an alligator, and even her own father all with prurient interest in her – may not set well with some viewers even though it is done for comedy, but that aside, the series has a feisty enough spirit, and delivers well enough on the laughs, to merit a recommendation. This is not a masterpiece but is definitely better than it could have been.

There's something decidedly blue-collar about the world of Pumpkin Scissors. There is no epic war to be won in a blaze of military glory—mainly because the war is already over. There are no cloak-and-dagger secret ops missions for an elite task force—instead, the task force is a ragtag team of everyday soldiers providing public services. But even without the glamour and spectacle of other military-themed titles, the second volume of the manga is still good entertainment, especially as it starts to reveal new layers of plot. In fact, it seems that every organization that isn't the Pumpkin Scissors unit has some kind of ulterior motive up their sleeve. With a healthy dose of conspiracy and some hard-nosed action, this military saga still has enough firepower to succeed.

The thickening of plot begins as early as the first few pages, with the folks at Section III investigating the tank they captured in the series' previous installment. In fact, the whole volume shows a better sense of continuity overall—each chapter ties into the next one, whether as a direct continuation or through certain subplots. One of the most intriguing subplots in the book's first half is the mysterious past of Corporal Oland: we learn more about him as Officer Machs digs up the dirt, as well as seeing how people interact among the unit. However, this storyline does sag in the middle as Oland gets hospitalized for an entire chapter; clearly, making friends with a downtrodden patient isn't quite as thrilling as pure military action.

Fortunately, the second half of the volume picks up the pace with a drug-smuggling plot—the ideal blend of conspiracy, backstabbing, and gun-wielding combat. And really, who can say no to the visceral thrill of Randel versus a guy with a flamethrower? Yet this storyline has a thoughtful side as well, depicting the plight of sewer-dwelling refugees and how their desperate situation (combined with corporate meddling) has turned into a cycle of crime. If one were to look for a political angle to Pumpkin Scissors, this is it right here: the condemnation of Big Business and Big Bureaucracy as scary evil guys who are out to get the Common Man. In fact, it's even revealed that other branches of the military have something shady going on; between these plot threads and the ominous last scene, it's clear that the series will have plenty of momentum going into Volume 3.

The blue-collar feel of Pumpkin Scissors also comes out in the artwork, which is unspectacular but still gets the job done. It's not going to win any awards for stylishness or detail, but it accomplishes the most important goal—telling the story visually. A varied cast of characters definitely helps; Randel's towering size keeps him from being mistaken for anyone else, and the other supporting members of the unit each have their own distinctive look. The cleanly lined rectangular panels also make it easy to follow each scene, and the careful spacing of dialogue helps to avoid visual clutter. There's no need to chatter too much in this series, after all—just let your weapons do the talking! And of course, that's exactly what happens in the action scenes, which come alive with plenty of explosions, blood and flying debris (although, as mentioned before, not quite as spectacular as the best in the genre).

Dialogue is pretty straightforward throughout this volume, and we should be thankful that it doesn't get bogged down in military jargon like other similarly-themed titles. Still, there are times when the writing gets a bit too over-the-top—Alice's roundabout explanation of the "Pumpkin Scissors" name; Randel's sappy hospital monologue about what the unit means to him—but this doesn't happen too often, and usually the script makes for smooth reading. Sound effects are left in the original Japanese, with tiny translations placed next to each one, and a brief glossary of cultural notes can be found in the back. (Not that it's terribly important—the fictional setting of the series has nothing to do with Japan anyway, apart from one joke in the text.)

With its second volume, the Pumpkin Scissors manga isn't exactly a giant leap of creative of expression, but it is continuing to build on the foundation set at the start of the series. The characters are getting to know each other better, certain organizations are getting involved in conspiratorial subplots, and the series is moving away from episodic adventures and towards a more continuous arc. It loses a bit of steam in the middle with the hospital episode, but the high-stakes action and societal commentary in the drug-smuggling storyline more than make up for it. Clearly, postwar adventure can be just as interesting as actual wartime.

The two-day limited theatrical release of the first Death Note movie drew more than 65,000 fans back in June, so Viz has gone ahead with a plan to do a similar, but somewhat broader, theatrical release for the second movie in mid-October. The second movie, which originally premiered in Japan in November of 2006, spends 139 minutes resolving the deadly duel of wits between Light/Kira and L, and while it probably would have been better if trimmed by 5-10 minutes, it nonetheless does a quite satisfying job of bringing the story to resolution without ever dragging Near into the picture. To accomplish this it has to condense or cut out quite a lot of the anime's content, but a lot of what was cut out (such as the Yotsuba&! Group business and nearly all of the “five years later” plotline) is not content that is going to be much missed by most fans. If you liked the anime or manga versions, you will probably be quite satisfied with how this one goes.

Most of the content involving Misa remains essentially the same as in the anime, except that Misa is played by a dark-haired Japanese actress rather than a blond. She still retains her full cutesy, lovesick “Goth-loli” persona and absolute devotion to Kira, though she comes across a bit less annoying here. Kiyomi Takada also figures prominently into the story as the third Kira, although she is used quite differently here; instead of being Kira's spokesperson, she is an ambitious TV station aid who uses the Kira situation to catapult herself into the anchor's chair. She also assumes some of the plot functions covered by Kyosuke Higuchi in the anime. While the overly-long climatic scene bears significant circumstantial similarities to the anime's climax, it has major differences, too, as not everyone who dies in the anime dies in the movie, or at least not at the same point in the story. Ultimately many fans may find the movie ending to be sadder yet more satisfying, and with a greater sense of closure, than its anime counterpart.

18-year-old Erika Toda was a great find as Misa, fitting the role perfectly in every sense but hair color. Sexy Nana Katase, who might be known to anime fans for theme song work on Hikaru no Go and Human Crossing gets to strut her stuff as Kiyomi, including scenes which allow her to show off a gorgeous set of legs. Otherwise the principal cast is composed of hold-overs from the first movie, of which Tatsuya Fujiwara turns in a thoroughly unimpressive effort as Light while Ken'ichi Matsuyama shines once again as L; like in the first movie, he not only nails the role and look of L but even plays up L's peculiar mannerisms, including the way he sits, eats, and stares. Viz Media relied again on Ocean Group to do the English dub, which carries over all of the voice actors from the anime with one big exception: Rem has a decidedly male voice this time rather than a deep feminine one.

Much of the movie does not use a musical score, although it is both fronted and ended by songs courtesy of the Red Hot Chili Peppers (Dani California and Snow (Hey Oh), respectively). Those that stuck around after the credits rolled were treated to the 25-minute second part of the “Making of” documentary shown after the first movie, which, presumably, will be included on the future DVD release. It does not offer much for special content but will doubtless be of interest to dedicated Death Note fans.

Visually and audibly, Origins is everything one has come to expect from a top-end Gonzo production: great artistry, quality animation, excellent and well-integrated CG work, and an ambitious soundtrack. It is, in fact, the most impressive-looking anime movie to come out in North America since Steamboy. What it lacks is a soul. A lot of things that look and sound good go on, but the story has all the depth, development, and spirit of an average fantasy RPG computer game.

While it doesn't exactly feel rushed, neither does the writing devote much time and effort to examining the potentially interesting settings (Ragna and the forest) or how the calamity which all but destroyed the world came to pass. The ruins of former civilization do get explored some, but little more effort is devoted to that than is necessary to discover Toola and bring her into the picture. More extensive world-building would have gone a long way towards improving the title, although that would have also required more than an 90-minute running time and may not be feasible in an action-centered tale clearly targeted at a shonen-oriented audience. The storytelling also occasionally inserts odd, seemingly random plot elements, such as the call Toola gets on her Raban (the multipurpose collar she wears, which is easily the coolest bit of tech in the movie), whose source and purpose is never thereafter explained.

From description alone, Spiral's conflicts sound like the most boring escapades ever. Truth be told, there's a lot of quick camera angle changes on a character who's just standing still and pointing a finger while they show just a little more of their hand. Somehow it manages to stay exciting and keeps you guessing about how each episode will turn out. After a couple episodes, the formula was immediately apparent, and yet refused to be stale.

Spiral seems to suffer from a slight identity crisis with its opening, though. While it's up to the standards usually expected from putting anime imagery to music, the song, “Kibouhou”, seems really out of place for this show. It's not a bad song by any means, and even pretty catchy. It just seems kind of mismatched to panning over pictures of a brooding male hero and such a darker-toned show like this. The ending theme was pretty standard as far as closings go.

A final thing worth nitpicking on this release is the DVD menu. Using cute names for the usual menu items might seem like an inventive idea, but it just falls flat here. The names used for languages and chapters, while appropriate, were hardly obvious at first glance. A DVD menu really doesn't need to be like this, it should just let me choose my language options, or whatever I need, then move along with watching the show. It was just more frustration while trying to get the show playing.

All in all, there's a lot here to like, because a lot of the show's appeal will be completely unexpected to most viewers. Spiral is gripping to watch, and it's easy to get hooked without even realizing it. It may lack the fanservice and action that draws in the average fan, but Spiral isn't the average show. It rewards those willing to give it a chance, and ensnares those who underestimate the appeal of the show.

The pussycats include mega-sluts Sonya and Kei, as well as the underdeveloped and undersexed (by their standards) Lou, who is sent after the lame dragon/monster/lizard jobs because she is thought incapable of seducing a man. The three are led by a grizzled old lady who regularly makes magic potions for various things, and also acts at their manager when they go on the road. Poor Lou can't get no respect, but all that changes in the second episode, when they go after the evil King Bad (!), who thought his brother died after he killed their parents and took over the throne by force (for some reason). That brother was really a sister, and it's Lou... so no wonder he can't get that face out of his mind!

It's unclear just what Midnight Panthers wants to be. It has action, comedy, and hentai elements, but it's blisteringly unsuccessful in all three categories. There's no respectable element in the girls or their shriveled caretaker, nothing that makes them good or worthy of hope on the part of the viewer. In fact, since their practices border on cannbalism, they seem like pretty sick puppies!

The result is something indescribably tasteless in its humor: we have a guy accidentally running into the cross of someone being crucified, conking his head with a bad cartoon sound effect and whining about it for a painfully long time, we have an incestual sex scene that ends with a french kiss with a disembodied head, and we have an ending that takes everything serious about the film and treats it like just another gag. And then Central Park Media has the nerve to call this "edited" (they couldn't possibly have taken out much) and slaps this with a 16+ (equivilant to an R) rating. With GRAPHIC sex scenes that last MINUTES long, there is no way this should be anything but an Anime 18 release.

To prove just how powerful a creative talent is behind a show, this is by the same production company as "Kite", which we worshipped last month. The animation, therefore, is fairly good (as is the character design), but the artistic and creative values that Yasuomi Umetsu brought to the party in Kite are nowhere to be seen in this one. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Umetsu turned up his nose at even watching this. It's a good thing the Green Bunny/Arms companies have laurels to rest on, because they sure aren't producing anything award-winning here. In fact, I have to tip my hat to anyone that can sit through it. (Even An Fu, who came up with a respectable Jazz score for Kite, simply turned out stock Casio crap for this one.)

The accouterments of modern society such as the Internet, cell phones, and digital music players that have, if possible, become even more ubiquitous in Japan than on this side of the Pacific. Fortunately, reading Fushigi Yûgi as a product of its particular historical time period does not at all detract from its pleasures. Yet on the other hand, the Viz translation is also a product of its time, and the adaptation dating from the late 1990s into the early 2000s does not age nearly as well as Yuu Watase's own fantastic tale of romance and adventure. The prose is more loosely adapted than one might be expect to find in Shojo Beat imprint titles these days—for better and for worse—and sound effects are replaced about half the time. (The other half of the time, you are referred to a lengthy and unwieldy list of endnotes.) You definitely are left with the impression of a manga in English that is trying not to be too “Japanese.” In spite of some very Asian cultural subject matter.

The VIZBIG editions are just that—big, heavy blocks of tightly bound printed matter that seem specially designed to break the finger bones of hapless reviewers. On the plus side, the paper and the overall print quality are excellent, and french flaps, metallic stamping, and thirteen pages of color illustrations in the second VIZBIG volume of Fushigi Yûgi are especially nice bonuses for a book that retails at only $17.99 (only a few dollars more than the first English language Animerica Extra editions of Fushigi Yûgi waaaay back in the day—anybody remember them?!). Plus, when you are finished reading, the object will make a pretty rose-colored doorstop—or deadly weapon. Bash somebody over the head with this baby, and it's gotta hurt.

While without question prominent in the manga milieu in Japan, not to mention having spawned any number of derivative rip-offs over the years, Watase's Fushigi Yûgi is without a doubt one of the titles to set the standard for what “manga” in the United States has come to be. For this reason alone, it is a must-read. But even if you couldn't care a whit about its historical significance, it's still a fun story that may be enjoyed purely on its own terms.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of those anime series with a veritable horde of fans whose devotion reminds us that the word “fan” is derived from fanatic. “Haruhi is crack,” they are wont to say, and rightly so. But if the anime adaptation of Nagaru Tanigawa's light novels is crack, then, alas, the manga adaptation is like the mother of all hangovers—sans the high. The fact that this was one of Yen Press's most anticipated licensed properties for 2008 only adds complexity to the savor of bitter disappointment.

So who takes the blame for this travesty? The short answer to this question would be everyone. Share and share alike! Let's start with Tanigawa's original story premise, and let's be fair. It is pretty darn interesting, at least in theory. We have a girl with vast, unlimited power to change the world as she sees fit—without even realizing that she is doing it. So then you start to wonder if all of these strange characters assembling around her are actually, as they suggest, there to observe her. Or are they really there because she created them? The answer to the question is left intentionally ambiguous, but the utter obtuseness of the plot definitely does not help to clarify matters.

Nor, for that matter, does the shoddy narrative construction. The story is told from the point of view of the ordinary boy known only as Kyon, and this monologue, which appears to have been faithfully adapted from the original novels' prose is tortured, convoluted twat. The sort of stuff, in short, that Japanese people write when they are trying—and failing—to sound genuinely literary. One is hard-pressed, for example, to imagine even the most credulous of audiences taking the sudden disappearance of the renegade Data Entity Ryouko seriously after she fails to dispatch Haruhi. Tanigawa is clearly trying to capture the perfect, nostalgic atmosphere with his prose, but all he ever actually manages to catch is his reader in the middle of a jaw-cracking yawn.

The clunky, over-literal translation does not help matters, either. Those who are not familiar with the Japanese language may be wont to assume that the bizarre, near unreadability of the narrative and dialogue is supposed to be a reflection of this equally bizarre tale. But that would be a misapprehension. In fact, the prose has been so poorly adapted that certain sentence constructions, which are ordinary and natural-sounding in Japanese but clunky to the point of morbidity in English, have not been rewritten at all. (A personal pet peeve is the adjective+noun+long-dependent-clause as subject of a sentence, and it appears on numerous occasions throughout the volume. In English, this construction should be completely rewritten at the sentence level unless the purpose of the translation is purely academic. Haruhi is a lot of things…but “academic” is not one of them.) All in all, it represents an unacceptable lack of editorial effort; I would expect to read something like this translation from the likes of Netcomics, not Yen Press.

And Gaku Tsugano's artwork is not anywhere near strong enough to save such an otherwise appalling production. His style bears a certain passing similarity to that of Sakurako Gokurakuin (Juvenile Orion, Category: Freaks)—minus most of the charisma. Plus, if it isn't bad enough that the characters are hardly more than your basic anime stereotypes, they are also frustratingly difficult to tell apart on the basis of art alone. In particular, it was easy to confuse Haruhi with Ryouko and Kyon with his various male friends. Arguably worst of all, the layouts, though competent enough for an action/fantasy title, lack comic pacing and timing; scenes that are supposed to be funny become easy-to-miss postage stamps in the bottom corners of pages.

In conclusion, if you are new to the Haruhi franchise, do not start with the manga. Because if you do, you will be exceedingly unlikely to ever proceed past this volume. Come to think of it, do not start this manga, period—unless your medicine cabinet is already well-stocked with prescription-strength painkillers.

It makes you think you've skipped pages, and you start going back to look for things missed that were never actually shown.

Pichi Pichi Pitch: Mermaid Melody would probably appear to younger girls, ala Tokyo Mew Mew, but the nature of the romantic interactions between the characters is, while not graphically, conceptually above the heads of younger readers. Parents might object to images of a girl, drunk on soda pop, kissing a half-undressed boy in his bed, to be sure, but there is a lot of sexual teasing as well that little girls just wouldn't get, or that is simply too mature for them. For the older readers, the gaps in the story are too confusing, and there are too many problems with the presentation of the mermaid world and conflict for it to be believable for anyone over the age of 10.

In almost every sense this is the Big Reveal volume, so much so that the opening battle against Bloody Agatha, while involving plenty of cool moves, is pretty much an afterthought. This is the volume where Norihiro Yagi, after more than six dozen chapters, finally gets around to revealing what is really going on and what the Organization is really up to. But will fans be satisfied? That depends entirely on what was expected.

Without question the Whole Truth confronts and at least partly deals with many issues that readers may have been wondering about for a long time. One of them is the very weapon from which the Claymores get their colloquial name. Who that has read this series (or watched the anime version) has not wondered at some point how these massive swords never break or even chip despite the tremendous forces applied to and against them? This environment may have shape-changing monsters but has never shown any magic, so this is a significant – and much-overlooked – detail. Where the yoma came from and the true motivations of the Organization are more obvious mysteries, and the explanation that Miria offers up here not only makes sense but puts many other things which have happened over the course of the series in context (such as the suspicious vagaries about time frame, for instance). On the downside, the answers that Yagi came up with are hardly novel ones; any veteran sci fi or fantasy anime fan has seen a scheme something like this before, and this version does not put any fresh twist on it. Anyone who had any question about the dastardliness of the Organization before this should have no question now, though.

For all the big revelations, the parts that do not concern the revelations or the Bloody Agatha battle are actually the best here, which could be looked at either as a testament to how well those scenes are handled or a sign of how overplayed the other parts are. Lots of familiar faces pop back up again in this one, and much of the volume's best fun is in seeing how much or little some of them have changed; Raki, who makes his first appearance in the current timeline, is a particularly welcome appearance. The volume also returns to one other issue from seven years ago that was left unsatisfactorily resolved and does so in an unexpected manner, creating a surprise arguably bigger than the ones Miria revels. The new Claymore introduced here, Renée, also has some potential, and the final scene is a suitably satisfying cliffhanger. Even the long-neglected secondary members of the Pieta Seven get a fair amount of their own panel time here.

Yagi's artistry is up to its usual specs: detailed background art, a broad variety of distinctive character designs for his Claymores, and dynamic, easy-to-follow action scenes. The most notable new design is Renée's, whose braided hair is doubtless far more complicated and time-consuming to draw but still works well; she is arguably one of the prettiest Claymore designs to come along yet. Raki's adult appearance is also satisfyingly aged, as there is no question that it is him when he first appears but also there is no question that he has grown up, too.

Of these four episodes, “The Sound of footsteps on the Grass” (i.e. episode 26) is arguably the weakest and most mundane despite offering a couple of the prettiest pieces of background artistry in the entire series; imagine a mountainside shrouded in mist tinged with reddish-purple or gold hues. It actually does nothing wrong and does have its own merits, but it lacks the mushi-focused emphasis of the other three and its more human story proves not as compelling as most others. “Eye of Fortune, Eye of Misfortune” (episode 25) suffers slightly because it lacks the pure originality of many others in the series, but the beauty of an early scene where Amane sees for the first time and a discomfiting late scene where the ultimate effect of the Ganpuku on her eyes is realized more than balance out its minor storytelling inequities. “The Sound of Rust” (episode 23) and “The Journey to the Field of Fire” (episode 24) rank among the series' best episodes, however, as both spin strong, involving, and compelling yarns about misfortune caused by encounters with mushi and the ways Ginko helps discover to work around them. They are the kind of episodes that can leave a viewer with a sense of awe as the music fades into the mellow closer, a sense that the viewer has watched something truly special.

And that is what keeps people coming back to this series, and what has made Mushi-Shi one of the highest-rated shows by fans here at ANN. Sure, its stories may be too low-key and mellow (some might say boring) to sufficiently entertain some viewers, as the series works best when a viewer just sits back and allows themselves to be wrapped up in the mood each episode establishes, but the quality of its production in all aspects except Ginko's character design, and how all of its elements work together to craft the whole, is self-evident. Its human character designs may be unglamorous and offer little major variation in appearance beyond Ginko, but that helps emphasize the plain rural settings and keeps attention on the story and the mushi rather than the characters' appearances, which is much more important here than in the vast majority of anime series out there. Its background art sets the story in gorgeous mountain vistas without overplaying them, while its depictions of the mushi themselves are endlessly inventive and certain individual scenes (such as Amane's first sight) delight with their stunningly effective beauty. The strains of the invariably low-key music and the equally subdued vocal performances keep the tone just right, assuring that the production never descends into needless over-dramatization. Putting an excellent animation job on top of all of that seems like a bonus.

The first thing one thinks upon watching Il Teatrino is: What on Earth happened? A direct sequel to 2003's superlative Gunslinger Girl, it looks shabby and inelegant and feels less cutting and complex. So what happened? A lot. For one, the astronomical budget (¥13 million, or about $130K per episode) of the original came back down to Earth, taking its inevitable toll on the visuals. Which explains the panning stills and other short-cuts. But it doesn't explain everything. More important is the transfer of directing duties from underrated technician extraordinaire Morio Asaka to empty shirt Hiroshi Ishiodori. That Ishiodori can't frame powerful images and never pushes the action beyond the merely competent of course has an effect, but what really hurts is the loss of Asaka's insight, his ability to see and communicate subtleties of feeling and thought, to sink into viewers, like needles into flesh, the horrifying contradictions of the lives lived by the girls of the SWA.

Ishiodori attempts to tap into those same feelings, but he's hampered by Artland's simplified, shallowly attractive designs and his own pedestrian instincts. Under his tutelage Triela, Henrietta, Rico and the others come dangerously close to being the “cute girls with big guns” stereotypes that the first season so studiously avoided. No longer can you see the torture behind Rico's bright acceptance of her existence or the near-psychotic possessiveness behind Henrietta's devotion to Giuse. His troubling habit of taking things at face value, capturing only the surface, doesn't extend to the girls alone. He ends the series with an affirmation of their relationships that rather unpleasantly resembles an implicit approval of their situation. Not even Kou Ootani's score—his best in years; filled with a wealth of haunting piano, great theme songs, and even a wonderful reworking of “Scarborough Fair”—can make up for the layers of meaning and emotion that are lost.

The hell of it is that the strength of mangaka Yu Aida's writing is such that even the dull over-layer of Ishiodori's direction can't fully suppress it. He has such an embarrassment of lacerating, morally ambiguous riches to offer that they poke through in quantities large enough to shred most of the series' peers. Il Teatrino is, like its predecessor, a black work of fragmented morality, an ice-cold portrayal of love and affection deliberately turned to violent, destructive ends; made all the more unpleasant by its exploitation of young girls and their half-formed emotions. This season further complicates things by introducing Pinocchio, who functions as both foil and parallel, and Franco and Franca, who put an all-too-human face on the SWA's terrorist opponents. In Aida's world of muddied morality, terrorists rekindle their humanity while their pursuers slowly abandon it, motivations and methods are shared along both sides of the law, and bittersweet beauty is to be found in the love one can have for a partner who exploits it. That all of that can emerge from under Ishiodori's deadening hand is certainly reason to celebrate. That it has to is a goddamned shame.

Still, devolution from season one notwithstanding, Il Teatrino is a propulsive political thriller with an introspective bent and a lot of difficult, unanswered questions to ask—an unusually sympathetic tale of terrorism and counterterrorism that can find humanity in even the most inhuman acts. The action isn't close to the standard set by the first season, but Pinocchio gives the series an overall continuity that the original lacked, allowing it to build to a bone-crushing finale that overcomes its technical shortcomings with sheer gut-punch narrative force. And even if it isn't as complex or penetrating as Gunslinger Girl, when one of the girls looks up and sweetly agrees to commit some atrocity, it can still cut the heart right out of you.

A worthwhile and insightful read, volume one of The Embalmer certainly isn't going to jump off the shelf at anyone. The title alone is enough to turn many readers away; those that pick it up would probably only do so out of morbid curiosity. If they did, the front cover continues the original impression, splashed in sickly colors of yellow, green, and black, zigzagged with stitches, featuring a dark, wild young man wearing a surgical mask. Interestingly, all these surface details hide a surprisingly bittersweet, insightful cache of stories about the everyday tragedies in life, and the people who are affected by them, told through someone who sees it all, an embalmer.

The definite highlight of this first volume is the amount of heart and detail given in each of the individual episodes that it is divided into. Each one deals with a different “patient” of the titular embalmer, Shinjyurou Mamiya, and each is its own “slice of life” story. In each of these there is a death, which holds special circumstances that Shinjyurou must deal with in bringing peace to the families or to the victims themselves. In one, a promising ballerina has a leg severed, but her fiancé wants her to be in her dance costume for the funeral. Another has a man die of a contagious disease when his last wish was to be able to hold his son one more time. These stories are moving on their own, but as each one is woven together through the eyes of Shinjyurou, they complement each other even more.

The character designs are very distinctive, with a spiky, thick style. Each character is easily distinguishable from the others, with plenty of detail in everything from their faces to their clothing to their hairstyles. Most of the characters are also unexpectedly deep, even the characters that only appear on a couple of pages. It is amazing how real these characters seem for the small amount of time that they appear. Most notable is the father with the disease, who only has a two-page appearance, but is completely developed as a loving father and husband, a hard-worker, and someone with an amazing level of devotion to his family.

In contrast, the two recurring characters, The Embalmer and his landlady, are rather poorly fleshed out. It seems that Mihara is holding off developing these characters until later volumes, leaving the reader to feel out the characters as they react to the events of the story. While this is not a bad device to use, it still leaves the characters a little hollow, especially the landlady, Azuki. Her relationship with Shinjyurou is very ambiguous. The reader is unsure whether she is in love with him or not; his feelings for her are likewise vague. There is almost no insight given to her character at all. There is a definite lack of background on these characters, and at the end of the book you feel more for the kid who only had eight pages than the main character of the story. On the positive side, the lack of information peaks curiosity a bit. One wonders how Shinjyurou got into embalming, why he seems so lonely, even why he lives in a church. It generates interest in the next volume to be sure, but at the cost of the current one.

Another Hidamari Sketch × ☆☆☆ work listed on free anime industry guide's cover

On Wednesday, the Okamisan (Ōkami-san to Shichinin no Nakama-tachi) anime's official website posted the cover image of the free "Maker Ōdan Anime Guide 2010 Summer" pamphlet, and the cover lists a previously unannounced Hidamari Sketch × ☆☆☆ work. The website posted the cover image to announce that Okamisan is part of this guide to the anime industry, but the cover also lists 47 other works from nine makers. The guide will be distributed at the Comic Market 78 event in the Tokyo Big Sight convention center from August 13 to August 15.

The Hidamari Sketch × ☆☆☆ television anime series — the third one in the Hidamari Sketch franchise — already premiered this past January. The previous two television anime series — Hidamari Sketch and Hidamari Sketch × 365 — each spawned a special mini-series, but a similar special mini-series has yet to be announced for Hidamari Sketch × ☆☆☆.

The Hidamari Sketch anime franchise adapts Ume Aoki's manga about a high school for the arts and the everyday life of four of its students. Director Akiyuki Shinbo and the studio SHAFT animated all three television series after working on Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and MoonPhase.

Sentai Filmworks licensed the Hidamari Sketch and Hidamari Sketch x 365 television anime series in North America, and Section23 Films distributed these two series on DVD. Yen Press published the fourth volume of the original manga (under the name Sunshine Sketch) in January.

Update 2: Aniplex's publicity representative Yuma Takahashi ("Aniplex Yuma") wrote in the Anime Maker Ōdan Sendenman Blog on Thursday morning that there have been times when Aniplex's mistake accidentally revealed something, but this is the first time something has been revealed for them.

Another impressive structure that is a well known tourist destination is Nijo Castle. Located on the eastern edge of a 70 acre compound, the building consists of 33 rooms, and is famous for the intricate paintings of landscapes which adorn the Palace's sliding doors, and for the innovative construction of wooden floors that squeak like nightingales when walked upon which was employed as a security measure against intruders.

Other memorable sites in and around Kyoto include the "Philosophers Walk", the Gion District, and Arashiyama, a charming tourist area distinguished by its landmark Togetsukyo Bridge, with Mount Arashiyama standing peacefully in the background. A wide selection of cafes, restaurants and shops are located near the famous bridge. If you venture a short distance north you'll also come across a cluster of bamboo groves and residential district with several small temples placed placidly among the wooded hillside.

The "Philosophers Walk" refers to a scenic two kilometer path running south from Ginkakuji Temple along a meandering river to Nyakuoji Shrine, and was named after philosophy professor Kitaro Nishida, who could often be seen using the pathway. Look in a number of Japanese to English dictionaries for the Japanese word "yoyaku". The following English words and terms will probably appear: reservation, advanced order, booking, appointment and subscription. Japanese normally select reservation when they are speaking and writing in English, but that often sounds awkward to American ears for some of the reservations. Among all these terms in the dictionaries, advanced order may be the most appropriate for New Years cards and fried chicken. While the simple word order does not appear in any of my dictionaries for "yoyaku," many native English speakers may think order is the most appropriate term. If I order New Years cards in September, I am obviously planning to use the cards for New Years.

On September 1, I walked to the post office for the first time in about a month. A sign over the door encouraged people to order their New Years cards. Actually, the banner over the entrance encouraged people to advance order their New Years cards. Advertisements and stores are very clear on the difference between ordering and advance ordering/reserving. An order is normally for an item or items that will either arrive soon or are already available. An advance order is usually something that will not arrive for some time because the item ordered is either not ready and will not be ready for some time because it is seasonal such as New Years cards and Kentucky Fried Chicken for Christmas, or because it is a new product that is not yet available.

For New Years cards and Kentucky Fried Chicken for Christmas, advance orders meet two purposes: enabling buyers to be confident that they will get what they want and enabling sellers to calculate the volume of demand and be ready to meet it. Considering that approximately 35 billion New Years cards are sent every year in Japan and that almost all of them are originally purchased from the post office, we can see why the post office would want to keep track of the volume and why they would want to start early. Japanese New Years cards are postcards, not cards like Hallmark manufactures. Nonetheless, 35 billion cards keep the post office busy, printing and delivering. The post office also needs to hire extra workers to deliver the cards on New Year's Day. If cards are posted by a certain date, the post office guarantees delivery on New Year's Day.

As to Kentucky Fried Chicken in Japan, 20% of KFC's annual sales are at Christmas, based on the traditional American Christmas dinner. Well, what Kentucky Fried Chicken advertises in Japan as the traditional American Christmas dinner. Regardless, 20% of annual sales is a lot of chicken. We can understand KFC wanting to be prepared.

Japan has other items that you can advance order/reserve such as summer gifts, year-end gifts, food, and cosmetics. The list may be endless. Advance ordering/reserving may be far more common in Japan than the United States for two reasons. First, advertising advance ordering/reserving is used in Japan as a promotional tool. Second, producers and sellers depend on advance ordering/reserving to help them estimate the quantities to be produced and purchased. This can be especially convenient in Japan where millions of people do things together at the same time very year.

Every day, thousands of people search for information on how to draw roses, people, horses, dragons, airplanes, and other objects. Over the next weeks I will be writing a series of articles that will help you learn how to draw anything and everything. My goal is to get you to a point where you no longer need drawing books or websites telling you how to draw, but are comfortable with a technique, or number of techniques that help you draw what you see . It may take you months or even years to get to this point, but if you are determined you will get there. All the information provided in the articles are meant to steer you in the right direction and get you there faster. You will have to set the pace. Remember to not set the bar too high, or to set it too low. Make sure you are challenging yourself, but at the same time do not choose to do something that is too challenging. You will be setting yourself up for failure.

Over the past number of years, but especially this year, with the creation of my first how to draw website, I have searched the internet to see how others tackle the subject of drawing. I found that most of them use the step by step technique that breaks down a drawing into manageable chunks. It seems that most well known artists use some sort of step by step technique that works for them.

The reason why most websites use this technique is because our brains seem to be able to only absorb so much at a time. At least my brain works that way. If I was to look at a photo of a person for a minute, and then told to draw it without ever looking at the photo again, I could not do it. However, if I was given a photo of a ball and told to do the same thing, I could draw it. My point is that our brains can only take in so much at a time and the step by step technique helps you focus on a certain part of the object one step at a time.

There are other techniques as well. What they all have in common is that they each train your brain to draw what you see. One of the techniques, which I will describe in greater detail in a future article, is the upside down technique. Just like the name suggests, you draw the object upside down. This helps your eyes focus on the actual shapes, rather than the image as a whole.

Graphs also break down an object into manageable sections. Especially for artists who can not get the proportions right, graphs are the way to go. By making a graph on you photo and drawing paper, you force your brain to focus on one area at a time. You draw what you see in the boxes, rather than trying to draw the whole object at once. Again, by doing this you are breaking down the image into manageable chunks.

I think I may be starting loosing some of you already. So, let me put you to work. Here my first assignment.

Assignment 1 - Finding a Drawing Book

Below is a list of drawing books. They are all drawing books by well known authors. I want you to choose a title and search it on the internet (amazon.com). Find a drawing book that looks appealing. Purchase it if you want to. But, before you do, make sure it is the best one. Don't pick one and then decide later that you actually wanted another one. There are many how to draw books, and not all of them are very helpful.

There are more, but as you do your search, you will come across them.

How to draw books are great for two reasons. They provide you with pictures of drawings, and with information and techniques you can use. Sometimes, it is hard to find something that is good to draw. Actually for me, often it is hard to find an image that is perfect for drawing. Most of the photos I have are not all that great for drawing.

Assignment 2 - Drawing Supplies

DRAWING PENCILS
As you wait for that drawing book to come, or when you go out to purchase one from an art store, make sure you also have the right drawing supplies

Here is what you should look for:

A set of drawing pencils. Drawing pencils range from around 2H - 9B. You should not really need any pencils harder than the 2H.

For those who do not know what the H and B stand for, let me explain. The graphite in each pencil has a certain hardness. The common HB pencil is right in the middle of the spectrum. B stands for blackness and H stands for hardness. The graphite ranging from B to 9B leave the darkest marks. The higher the number of B or blackness, the softer the graphite will be. That is why this range in used a lot in drawings. Dark marks are often more effective than light ones.

The other range, which is often good for shading and light areas is the F - 2H range. Yes this range goes all the way to 9H. But the 9H is so light, I don't think you will want to use it and most drawing pencil packages do not go that high in hardness.

As you have most likely guessed by now, the higher the number of hardness, the harder the graphite and the lighter the mark will be.

Just for your information, there is another pencil that I mentioned that fits in the middle of the spectrum beside the HB pencil. It is the F which stands for fine point. There, I think I got them all.

DRAWING ERASERS
I highly recommend that you get a kneaded eraser. This eraser you can mold by warming it in your hands. What is really nice about this eraser is that it it pulls the graphite off the page. Many other erasers tend to roll some of it deeper into the page. If you do not already have one. Pick one up. They are inexpensive.

DRAWING PAPER.

There are so many different kinds of drawing paper that it is hard to recommend one or two, but here are some labels to look for:

Acid Free - Most are acid free after they are manufactured, however will become acidic again over time.

Buffered - It is a bonus if it has been buffered, which means that it has undergone some chemical treatments so that it will stay acid free).

Lignin free - If it is lignin free, that means that it has been made from something free of lignin, such as cotton, or has undergone some treatment to make it safe.

You may want to try using vellum paper. It has a nice grain. It is toothy, which means it has texture. This makes it easier for shading because the graphite has something to grab on to.

SHADING TOOLS

For shading and smudging I recommend that you use a drawing tortillon. I suggest using them because the oil on your hands can, in the long run, damage your drawing. What also works, and some artist use them all the time, is cotton swabs, or Q-tips. Occasionally I use Q-tips, but I still prefer the tortillon. Try both and see what works well for you.

FINISHING

If you are using a sketch book and would like to keep your work in good condition it is a good idea to purchase a clear spray to protect your work. It prevents the drawings from smudging.

Note: If you can, spray your drawing outside because it has very strong smell!

Perceptions about female beauty have always been subject to periodic fluctuation, as each generation of mankind has sought its own definition of the ideal female form. A few hundred years ago, feminine corpulence was all the rage in Europe, as both men and women idealized female bodies that were much fleshier than most people would find attractive today. However, women today still want to look like women - and for many that entails having curves. If you are one of the millions of American women for whom breast size is a serious concern, you can put your mind at ease. There are, in fact, foods that can make your breasts larger!

The most popular area of Gion is along Hanami-koji street from Shijo Avenue to Kenninji Temple. A nice place to dine, the street is lined with preserved merchant houses which now serve as high-end restaurants that mainly specialize in kaiseki ryori (Japanese haute cuisine and a specialty of Kyoto), although there are restaurants specializing in other types of food as well.

The restaurants around Hanami-koji are typically expensive. Interspersed among them are a number of ochaya teahouses, the most exclusive and expensive of Kyoto's dining establishments. Hanami-koji is usually crowded, and unfortunately there are no restrictions on automobile traffic on the street.

Another scenic part of Gion is the Shirakawa Area which runs along the Shirakawa Canal parallel to Shijo Avenue. The canal is lined by willow trees, high class restaurants and ochaya teahouses, many of which have rooms overlooking the canal. As it is a little off the beaten path, the Shirakawa Area is typically quieter and with a more seasonal atmosphere than Hanami-koji.

Nudity Issues

Hot springs in Japan are enjoyed naked, even though there are a few exceptions. While a majority of baths are gender separated, some are mixed. Mixed baths are usually found in more remote areas.

Furthermore, some establishments have both, gender separated and mixed sections, for example, in the case that there is just one spectacular outdoor bath, which the owner wants to make accessible to both genders.

For obvious reasons, many Japanese women, especially younger ones, avoid mixed hot springs, and it is not unusual that mixed pools are almost exclusively used by men.

If you do not feel comfortable naked in front of other people, you should inquire about "kashikiri" (private) baths, which are available at some ryokan. Private baths are sometimes also known as "kazokuburo", lit. family baths.

Tokyo, capital city of Japan since 1869, is one of the most populated metropolitan cities in the world. Believe it or not, Tokyo City is complex, big and always on the move. Be warned, if you are in Tokyo City for the first time, you will be greeted with the city's saturated big concrete high rise building, very wide roads, raised concrete expressways crossing one another.

This remarkable city is also where the old meets the young. You can be in the most modern place such as Roppongi in one minute and you can wonder down the street to experience a traditional old shrine or town the next moment. This is the beauty of exploring the City of Tokyo.

Greater Tokyo has 23 wards (ku), 26 smaller cities, 7 towns and 8 villages. To have an appreciation of its size, the distance from the east to west is 88 km (55 mil) while it is 24km (15 mil) from north to south. The way Tokyo City is organized seems to be a bit complicated in terms of finding a place even with address. You are not alone as the local themselves find it difficult as well. The best way to go about it is to ask for direction. In Tokyo city, there are numerous koban (local police box) where you can approach for help. Believe it or not, the policemen spent most of their time helping people finding their destination. The lesson here is to always bring along the location map of your accommodation. You can get it from your hotel.

The City of Tokyo is really a big place and the best way to know this city is to have an introductory city tour. You can start your day by visiting the Meiji Shrine at Shibuya ku. The Meiji Shrine sits in Yoyoji Park. This is one of the must-see religious sites in Tokyo which was dedicated to Emperor Meiji, the first emperor of modern Japan. During New Year, it draws a million-plus of crowds. This gives you enough good reasons to pay a visit.

The next place to visit is the Imperial Palace East Garden. Along the way, you will travel past the National Diet Building recognized by its pyramid-shaped dome. This building houses the Japanese parliament. There is a free 60-minute tour of the Sangi-in or House of Councillors or Lower House when the Diet is not in session. If you are interested and have sufficient time, do come back here again.

The Imperial Palace East Garden (Higashi-Gyoen) is open to public but not everyday. It is close on Monday and Friday. If you happen to be there on these two days, can visit the Imperial Palace Plaza instead. In the garden, you can have a closed up view on the massive stones that built the castle walls, visit the Museum of Imperial Collections and enjoy a stroll on the typical Japanese garden. There are three gates to the garden and the most commonly used gate is the Ote-mon on the east. The Ote-mon is closed to the Tokyo Station and this was the principal entrance to Edo Castle for more than 200 years.

After visiting the Imperial Place East Garden, it will be almost half a day gone and is a good time take a rest and have lunch. If you are with a tour group, your lunch will mostly be included. However, if you are on you own, do not worry. There are plenty of eateries in the city of Tokyo, ranging from restaurant to fast food outlet. One of the best bet is to get into the basement of a department stores where you can find food in the basement food hall. You can visit the nearby Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo's Gina district where you can eat to your hearts content. Finding suitable choices of food to suit you appetite is never a problem in Tokyo because there are simply too many to chose from. If you are not in for Japanese food, then go for a simple burger.

The next stop will probable be the most celebrated district of Asakusa. Do you know what, I visited this place twice when I was in the City of Tokyo. This place is famous for the Sensoji Temple (Asakusa Kannon Temple) and the colorful Nakamise walkway leading to the temple. The Nakamise walkway is lined with many colorful stores leading up to Sensoji Temple, Tokyo's oldest and most famous Buddhist temple. This is where you can get all your souvenirs.

The last visit on your agenda might be the futuristic Odaiba which has become one of Tokyo's most popular areas. You can cross over to this island via the Rainbow Bridge and enjoy the view of Tokyo bay. At Odiba you can visit places like the Palette Town, the Aqua City and the unusual shopping mall of Venus Fort. It is rather a big place with some wonderful parks to stroll.
